Derek B. Simon Selected as HSBA Leadership Institute Fellow
We congratulate Carlsmith Ball partner Derek B. Simon, who was selected by the Hawaiʻi State Bar Association for its 2024 Class of Leadership Institute Fellows. This is the 16th year of the HSBA's Leadership Institute program, which includes a diverse cohort of lawyers who are emerging leaders in the legal community.
Derek received his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Hawaiʻi, William S. Richardson School of Law, where he had several notable accomplishments. His Second-Year Seminar scholarly research paper earned the HSBA Real Property and Financial Services Section Award and the C. Jepson Garland Memorial Scholarship Award. He was also a two-time oralist on Richardson's Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court team, including the 2015 Pacific Regional Championship team. Additionally, Derek was the recipient of several CALI Excellence for the Future Awards.
While in law school, Derek's professional experience included externing for the Honorable J. Michael Seabright of the United States District Court, District of Hawaiʻi, and the Honorable Michael D. Wilson of the Supreme Court of Hawaiʻi. He also was a research assistant to Professor David L. Callies.
Derek's practice focuses primarily on land use, real property, administrative law, and civil litigation. He has been named to Best Lawyers in America: Ones to Watch and Hawaii Super Lawyers Rising Stars.
