First Closed Loop Biomass-fired Energy Facility in the U.S.
GET Green
Carlsmith Ball played an integral role in making the nation’s first closed loop biomass-fired energy facility a reality. Carlsmith assisted and advised Green Energy Team LLC (GET) in developing, constructing, and running the renewable energy operation, which generates and sells electrical energy to Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC), the electric utility for Kauai.
Carlsmith enabled GET to structure a well-founded approach to developing the $90 million facility, including:
- Negotiating access to tree farm sites
- The power purchase agreement with KIUC
- The $76M construction loan and credit facility from Deutsche Bank
- The term financing from the Rural Utilities Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture
This facility is the first commercial biomass energy project in Hawaii, and is a significant contribution to the clean energy goals of both the county of Kauai and the state of Hawaii.
